Santorini

After sailing all night from Athens we arrived in Santorini in the early hours. We noticed that there were 3 other large cruise liners and new it was going to be rather busy and the temperature was going to be hot. The wait for the cable car lift was amazing, with about 10000 tourists from the 4 boats, and eventually we made in on and up the 2-300 metres vertical lift in a couple of minutes, 36 passengers at a time. At the top there was a maze of alleyways and shopping streets with the usual tourist bargns at inflated prices. We wandered uphill and eventually found a spot which overlook the town and valcano caldera which is several thousand metres deep and the liners cannot drop anchors and maintain positions by using their engines. After a few photos we started back and had a few stops for refreshments. When we arrived at the cable car station there was a que streching several blocks, longer than a Taylor Swift que that had an expected wait time of 2-3 hours, crazy.

We noticed a winding path back to water level and decided to give it a try, and off we trod. the way was very windy and very long and the journey took Kay and I about 42 minutes. Along the way there were several groups of donkeys and mules that are used to either get paying customers up or down the mountain. It was very exhausting experience and knocked the stuffing out of me. We made it back to the boat and settled down for the night. The next morning we were bound for Rhodes.

Here a few images of Santorini from other sources that give the character of Santorini as a town living on a 2-300 cliff overlooking a volcanic caldera that exploded about 1600 BC and ejected up to 40 cubic kilometres of material, quite a bang

  1. What an amazing place! However I’m not keen on the crowds. I wonder what it would be out of season? I potted up your punnet of Japanese maples today – 7 seedlings were viable.
