Day Trip to the Parthenon and Surrounds

After a 14 hour flight from Melb to Duabi in cattle class, Kay and I and our neighbours Don and Pam. We waited in connections for 5 hours on hard plastic chairs, we got another Emirates flight to Athens, another 5 hours. Needless to say we arrived absolutely stuffed. After a shower and an 8 hour sleep woke up feeling a great deal better.

We took one of those hop on hop off bus tickets, and did a tour of Athens. Its population is about 4 million. The noticable difference is that Athens has been around for about 3000 years and complete destruction in 480 BC by the Persian Xerxes. The streets are rather narrow and the traffic can be horrendous at the best of time. Keep watching for images from Athens as soon as i get my SD card reader.

Athens has rather narrow streets and it is a nightmare to travel on them. The bus drivers have my deep admiration for the way they operate.
The exchange rate is roughly AU$2 for 1 Euro. The Price of diesel is 1.78 Euros per litre, This equates to a price of about Au$3.50 per litre. I have only seen one Toyota Hilux 4 door 4WD Ute and dont expect to see many more. Most traffic is small sedans and thousands of Motor bikes and scooters.
Tomorrow we board the Resiliant Lady for our trip back to Sydney. First stop is the island of Santorini. See you then.

  1. Hi Wally.
What a great news! Another adventure!
Is it any possibility that you visit Croatia between Oct 28 and November 3rd? It would be great to see you both.

    1. Hi Wioletta. How lovely to hear from you. No chance to catch up this time but i reckon there is one more trip in us, Europe and especially Poland in the next 3 years. How is Pio young Mike and Magdalena and of course Sylwia?
We catch the ship tomorrow and sail for Santorini, and the port Said, a visit to the pyramids and through the suez. I really is great to hear from you and hope we stay in touch and in 3 years catch up in Poland. That would be amazing.
Take care and look forward to more comments

    1. Hi Lisa
its nice to hear from my only niece. Cats are everywhere and are part of the local environment. I will send a photo of the girls next chat.

  2. Hey there intrepid explorers! I’m so excited to hear about your travels. I love Athens, despite its terrible traffic, and I’m so impressed by your bedroom window view. You’ll be pleased to know that your seedlings are still alive … no guarantees though. I’ve actually got the fire on today since we’re having a cold snap. But I’ve been brave and planted most of my veggies. I know. I know. It’s not show day but I thought I’d live dangerously! 🤣 I’ve never been to Santorini so will be interested in your impressions. Also love to hear about the ship. Can I suggest that you be useful to RB and ask for things to test out their staff and systems. I’m having a nice time imagining the things you could ask for. 🤣. Cheers Anthea

    1. Hi Anthea
Lovely to hear from you. Athens was good but 3 days is enough and you have to get out into the country side. Mid 20s here and getting humid. Glad to here plants are surviving. A note from catnapping about the girls is that they have settled down and are eating and shitting well. We have a list of things that Richard needs to improve and will let him know. Santorini was chaotic with 4 cruise liners in port at once. We move onto Rhodes and the knights Templar and then towards Egypt. See you in 5 weeks
